Do you support a federal ban on text messaging by drivers?

The Ford Motor Company on Thursday became the first automaker to endorse a federal ban on sending text messages while driving. Text-messaging bans have already been enacted in 14 states and the District of Columbia. Transportation Institute concludes that text messaging by drivers makes them 23 times more likely to crash or narrowly avoid a crash.

Without a doubt, yes! Texting+Driving=Dangerous!

Yes, I would support a ban. I'm guilty of texting and driving and it really is dangerous.

Yes, I would! We are talking about saving lives, that must always be the priority!!
Ask yourself
How would I feel if I killed someone?

Yes, I would totally support that. It's far more dangerous than people realize.

But... playing the devil's advocate- I can see the argument being that it's no more dangerous than talking on the phone, eating, putting on make-up, etc... anything that distracts your attention from the road. There are LOTS of things people shouldn't do when driving!

I would absolutely support this. A couple of years ago I was driving to Atlanta and trying to read a message on my Blackberry at the same time. I was going about 80 mph and slid off onto the shoulder of the road. It scared me so much I swore I'd never do it again.

Wow! That's a crazy story. Thanks for sharing. Glad you are ok.

In France even phoning is not alowed when driving.

No. The federal government shouldn't address non-malicious actions.

How are we supposed to catch people texting? What would they be fined?

As it is, it's already illegal where I live so it doesn't matter- but I have never heard of anyone going to court for it.

it's pointless since doing anything distracting while driving is already illegal and considered reckless endangerment.
