I read recently where the average American spends less than 45 minutes a day outside. I started thinking about how much time I spend indoors vs. outdoors. For me, I love running, walking hiking, and biking so I'm outside a lot. My dog Lucy comes to me at least three times a day and pokes me with her nose to get me to walk her. I always try to honor her requests. I camp and backpack with the boys. My wife spends endless hours gardening. Many of our family vacations include National Parks (the Dry Tortugas is next!). We are very much an outdoors family. Even when I'm in big cities I'll always choose a sidewalk cafe or rooftop bar over someplace that is closed in. I'm guessing that I average at least 2 hours a day outside.

What about you? How much time do you spend outside? Do you think we lose something by spending too much time inside?

Not nearly enough. I love being outside, getting some sun, feeling the breeze, but I find myself indoors mostly on weekdays. Weekends are different. I'm out and about for the majority. Southern California has a lot to offer outside, and I definitely try to take advantage of that as much as possible.

Weekdays - 1-2 hours outside/day
Weekends - 4-6 hours outside/day

And yes, I lose my sanity and forget about how beautiful life is outdoors when I'm cooked up inside all day.

I wish I could spend more time outside! Weekdays I'd be lucky if I spend 1 hour outside, weekends 2-4 hours. I love camping and try to go as often as I can.
Being outside usually gives me time to reflect and step back from all the craziness that we have to go through everyday.

Not enough! I really need to tear myself away from my computer more often...esp during the weekdays. Sam and I try to do things outside on the weekend - this past weekend we had lunch outside in Malibu...and gosh, I treasured every second of it.

I spend quite a bit of time outside during the day, since I'm a nanny- so I'm outside with my niece for the greater chunk of the day. On the weekends, even moreso. I love the outdoors!

I'm not outside enough, but i make time to be outside when i can. Tonight i went cycling for an hour, tomorrow i'll be playing soccer for and hour and i've got hurling on wednesday and thursday so i'll be out side for a couple of hours each of those evenings. I usually take a 15-30 minute walk at lunch aswell which is a great escape from the work space. In ireland, being outdoors can often be weather dependent.

Not enough. I recently got full blood-work done by my doc. He said that I have a severe vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is naturally produced when skin is exposed to sunlight. I told him it's probably because I have a severe golf deficiency.

Living in the country one cannot help but feeling the urge to be outside...start my day earlier so I can have my 30 minute walk before anything else....it is refreshing and sets the mood for the day....noticing the changes of the surroundings .... the berries ripen...the fields turn golden and the thought becomes clearer....Weekends are great because there is not time pressure. There is a small river nearby and a forest where we can enjoy a long walk and a dip, weather permitting...
