Is it worth paying more for organic food? Why or why not?

In my opinion: YES. More and more science is finding that our food and environment has an impact on our health and the health of generations to come. Epigenetics is the study of the how the genes in our DNA are turned on and off. It has shown that famine and environmental effects (such as pesticides) can adversely affect the health of our grandchildren even if no changes to the underlying DNA take place. Truly we are what we eat. So eat the best food you can afford. And cook it yourself too!

If you can afford to yes!
In my opinion, they taste better and you don't have to peel them either!
Some scientists say they contain more vitamins & minerals simply because they are less intensively farmed, others would dispute that!
Organic farmering methods feed the soil as opposed to normal farming methods which carry on depleting the soil year after year,
until there is virtually nothing left in the soil!
Leading to very low levels of vitamins & minerals in the crops to feed us our daily nutritional needs!
And how many people feel the need to top up their nutrition levels because of this?

Yes we are what we eat, so eat food as fresh as possible and lightly cooked to preserve as many nutrients as possible!!!

If you have the money YES. Your body just feels better, plus its better for the environment. If your real good, you can buy from local farmers too. Thats what does the most good for the earth.

Some organic food, at least for health reasons. Grains...doesn't matter so much. Fruits, vegetables and meat, more so. If you can only afford some organic foods, make them milk, eggs, potatoes and any fruit. Organic meat and eggs are from animals that for the most part are humanely treated and humanely slaughtered. Not so with mass produced, regular groceries. Organic veggies and fruits are fertilized organically with pesticides at a minimum. Organic milk doesn't contain extra chemicals and antibiotics.

Also look at what fruits absorb more of the commercial pesticides used in non-organic foods. Apples and Peppers both absorb a lot so if you can only start with a few organic purchases make it the ones that will count the most.

I agree with everyone here--if you can you should. But in this economy some may find a list of the organic must buys useful.

I think this is a funny debate. Because you know, they still use pesticides in organic food, they just use natural pesticides, which can be just as harmful to you. I mean a spider's poison is natural, but it's still poison...

Sorry I just think it's important to say that.

Also has anyone seen Penn and Teller's bullshit on Organic Foods?
(they cut a banana in half and ask people which is the more tasty one, the organic or the regular, it's just funny to see mind over matter :D)

There was also a 13 page paper written in my english 200 class about the effects or non-effects of organic foods.


I'd rather but local any day over organic.

Business has always been supply and demand. The more people buying organic, the more farmers growing organically, the more th price drops and the healthier the environment and we all are for it.

We buy as much organic as possible.. we've changed a lot of our food plan because I have an idea that the combination of pesticides and growth hormones in meats and veggies are one of the primary causes of cancer in healthy people, meaning those that don't really drink or smoke..
