I have a theory that the media needs to constantly come up with new ways to scare the crap out of us in order to survive (get rating). This is a chart of deaths in the U.K. over 300 days. You will see leprosy and swine flu are pretty close in totals of deaths caused. Would we not be better served by a bunch of stories telling us to put down the Big Mac and go for a walk?
I for one believe that it has been blown out of portion. The 2009 H1N1 is very treatable. You can treat it just like a cold. I think I will have to agree on this one.
My flat mate has been sick and he went to the Doctor who told him he could have swine flu. No one seems to be overly concerned that we are all going to die in the flat. I'm not even sick. So I do think people are over reacting a little.
The media has completely gone ape shit with the swine flu epidemic. If you have swine flu in certain communities, you may as well be a leper. Although I don't want my kids exposed to swine flu, I also realize that here in West L.A., we have the best doctors, hospitals and treatment facilities at our disposal. I do agree, however, if one does contract h1n1, the responsible thing to do is stay the F home.
The media overblows everything. It is the only way they can get our attention anymore. It is a sad fact of life though that the things that are REALLY the most important often go unreported. Putting down the Big Mac and going for a walk would save hundreds of thousands of lives. Probably more than have been lost in all recent wars combined. But there's no money to be made in telling people that. Nobody wants to take on the fast food corporations and nobody wants to advertise when the subject is a message people don't want to hear. So I say: turn off your TV, get off your fat butt, and go outside! Its pretty damn nice out there!
