Fast Company:
"Over 375 feet high--that's 72 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty--Anish Kapoor's ArcelorMittalOrbit has been chosen as the monument to mark the London Olympics in 2012. The city's shy and retiring Mayor, Boris Johnson, has already nicknamed it the Hubble Bubble tower due to its striking resemblance to a shisha pipe.

"Work is due to start on the steel sculpture, which the Mayor is hoping will become a rival to Paris' Eiffel Tower, in the next few weeks. The cost of the 1,400 ton steel structure has been put at around $30 million, although most of the bill is being picked up by steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal who, like Kapoor, is India born, but resides in the British capital."

What do you guys think of this tower?

'a rival to Paris' Eiffel Tower' ... . . . . reallly now?
'Hubble bubble'...The Hubble is way too cool for this.
I'm sure this structure will gain it's own type of fame which will be characteristically unique.

It reminds me of a rubber band that has gotten curled up and tangled with itself.
Also, I usually like Anish Kapoors' work. But right now I think he needs to take a step back and re-learn the art of editing.
things Anish Kapoor heard when he released his first piece, no doubt !!!
They could of done better.
yeah, what did u contribute to it, when they did?
I think this is a bit silly, its very old fashioned to host a major games and build a tower, why does london even need this? They want to rival the eiffel tower, but this is gonna be so small, i guess it might be quite cool, the only good thing is london wont be paying most of the bill but i wonder how much they will pay, London has a lot of problems that money could really help towards, and i dont think a tower should be their priority... Though i do think it looks cool, how many people will actually use it after the games is over?
remember, London is the first city of the world and it doesnt need to rival any other city in the world, let alone Paris !!!
Don't you mean the largest city in Europe?
Well rivaling the eiffel tower is what Boris Johnson wants to do, "if Paris can have the Eiffel Tower, then we thought the Olympic site had to have—something".
well, first of all, who are we (anyone not from London) to decide if its stinkin. Sheesa pipes smell really good if filled with the right fragrant filling (namely; cinnamon, apple, strawberry), and as for the shape, it looks like a really crazzzzzzzy roller-coaster, with some really mind twisting height and turns. Dont know if the qualification is worth it, since I didnt see the other entries, but if the qualified authorities decided on it, there must have been a rating system, otherwise the effort is futile, dotcha think???
So London wants to be known for its Shisha, or for the architecture? You pick. PS. Though shishing is becoming such a trend now, and a popular culture, it's not really healthy, because one shisha session takes about 40min to one hour. And let's say in one session, could take about 200 puffs. I'm put off by it because it's still smoking, but only with flavoured fillings(as you say). I've tried shishing before(I'm not against it), but still I feel like is London out to promote smoking?
Looks like a rollercoaster that's been put in a vice. weirdness!
Out of all the topics on this forum I find it funny that people are getting into it about a sculpture!
