Sam and I are off to New Zealand and Australia in about a week for our one big yearly vacation. Can't tell you how excited I am about this trip. The two countries have always been on my list of places to visit before I die. Eugene will be holding down the fort for those 2 1/2 weeks, just an FYI. I'll try and pop in here and there.
What places have you gone to that you think others should visit at least once before they die?
Here's my list:
Tahiti - Bora Bora
Paris - the most beautiful city in the world
Venice - amazing
Rome - breathtaking
Santorini, Greece
Ko Samui, Thailand
Japan
I think Paris definitely ranks up there on my list. Culturally, Japan is one of the most unique places I've ever been to.
In the US, Yellowstone would top my list of places to visit before you die.
The above are photos from the Aran Islands off the West coast of Ireland (Counties Clare and Galway to be precise) The 3 islands (Inis Mór, Inis Meán and Inis Oírr) are bastions of irish heritage and culture and are part of the Gaeltacht in Ireland (areas where the native Irish language, An Gaeilge is spoken as a first language). The beauty and serenity of these islands and their small populations is fantastic to experience. There is a sense of calm and joy you get when out there with the Atlantic ocean pounding into the cliffs and with the ocean breezes blowing around you.
Inis Meán the middle island is where John Millington Synge came to write and was inspired to produce much of his plays, poetry and stories in the early 20th century. The pictured cottage is where he stayed. On Inis Oírr there is wonderful views back to the coast of County Clare on the mainland and to the awesome face of the Cliffs of Moher and the grey limestone hills of the Burren. From Inis Mór you can see the coast of Connemara in galway and the many Galway Hookers (a traditional sailboat) and Gleoiteogs out sailing.
The west coast of Ireland is spectacular and yet rarely gets the foreign visitors who seem to think that a visit to cosmopolitan, homogeneous, overpriced and pretty underwhelming Dublin constitutes a visit to Ireland (my advice is spend a few hours in Dublin if you must and then get out ASAP in fact that goes for most Irish cities and large towns). If you visit this country, ignore Dublin and come west where art flourishes and culture abounds. Counties Kerry, Clare, Galway and Donegal are amazing places with stunning scenery, quiet villages, wonderful history and decent people It is the real Ireland and it is the sort of place you would be happy to get lost in because chances are you'll discover something beautiful!! (unlike Dublin or some of the other cities where if you get lost, chances are you'll get mugged!).
