I love visual effects films and these ever-evolving techniques make movie-watching the greatest form of entertainment. Sometimes these effects are so beautiful that I forget I'm watching a film and instead I'm looking at a painting or seeing poetry in motion. This is just my list in an attempt to compile the films which I think contain the greatest and most beautiful scenes ever created using special effects.......

(by the way, no completely animated films were considered for these rankings......)

10. Legend (1985) - Ridley Scott ventures into the fantasy genre. The carefree fantasy world turns into a virtual hell when the action shifts to the layer of Darkness and his minions.
9. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) - This story takes the viewer on an incomprehensible journey, which includes visits into the stomach of a whale, on the moon with Robin Williams’s floating head, and into the depths of a volcano.
8. King Kong (2005) :)
7. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
6. Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
5. The Abyss (1989) - James Cameron delivers state-of-the-art special effects as always, creating moving bodies of water, undersea ‘aliens,’ and a shining suboceanic city.
4. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
3. MirrorMask (2005) - this imaginary world’s dark tone at times looks like something that dropped out of a Salvador Dali painting.......
2. The Fountain (2006) - so beautiful......
1. What Dreams May Come (1998) - the unforgettable meditation of Hamlet about the afterlife ....and the effects in this powerful film essentially become the story. I love it.

I hate CGI, I think it looks too clean and too fake. Nothing tops the original Star Wars. Also I love what Spike Jonze did with Where the WIld Thing Are.

If we look only on the visual part: "300" and "The Spirit"; I can watch them unlimited times . If we look deeper: "Pan’s Labyrinth", latest "Chronicles of Narnia" and Chinese big productions

2001: A Space Odyssey - Kubrick and his team set the bar pretty high (with the space scenes in particular)
Clash of the Titans - one of my all time favourites (thank you Ray Harryhausen)
Tron - Disney leave me awestruck
Superman (Richard Donner's one) - a man flies!
Star Wars Trilogy (the original one) - took the effects of 2001 to the next level and beyond creating a whole new effects industry
Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Weta show ILM that they have competition!
Terminator & T2 - half man half machine and then a liquid metal shapeshifter
Alien & Aliens - two films and both offer great alien planet and alien creature effects
Blade Runner - future noir with awesome LA cityscapes
Sin City - so very different
