I come from a very polish family so Thanksgiving isn't really our forte. Every year we're getting better, though! We just started having sourdough, cranberry, and kumquat stuffing which I LOVE. I am also a huge fan of my mom's mashed potatoes and the big turkey itself. As for cranberry sauce, I've tried so hard to like the homemade stuff but the jelly crap that comes out of a can is just so freaking good!
One thing we've done several times that you all might consider is actually having two Thanksgivings. On the actual Thanksgiving Day everyone is busy with their families. Therefore we set up a second Thanksgiving dinner just for our friends a week or so later. It is a nice way to gather with them and show them how thankful you are that they are in your life. It is also a great way to kick off the holiday season. We serve something other than turkey (because everyone has had their fill of that) but we do all the side dishes and desserts just like the regular day. We use the china and the crystal and the linen napkins and everything. It seems like a lot of work but I promise you it is well worth it to celebrate with a big group of your friends all together.
