Harry Connick, Jr. was both shocked and amazed at an act that was impersonating Michael Jackson and his brothers, as he acted as guest judge on the show, Hey Hey It's Saturday, an Australian show. Connick gave the group a "0" score for the performance. Later, Connick gave a race-related speech explaining why black-face is a bad thing. "If I knew that was going to be a part of the show, I definitely wouldn't have done it.'
My question to you: What do you think about Harry Connick, Jr.'s response? What does this incident say about racism in Australia?
I take offence at the stupid comment that Australians are racially insensitive. What a crock, nice generalisation. Do you want me to weigh in with some nice generalisations as well?
Good on him for expressing his concern, the host then apologised and that should have been the end of the story. But no, the media had to beat it up and make an international slinging fest out of it and get it aired all over the world. It was a skit that was poor in taste to a degree in our country and certainly in the US, it wasn't particluarly funny and it was done with no malicious intent. The producers should have realised that something tat happened 20 years ago on the show would certainly not have been appropriate these days and if they didn't anticipate that a visiting American guest wouldn't have been offended by it seems to be just stupidity on their part.
The skit was done in australia for australian TV.. absolutely no harm was meant by it. it was a great act! (im aussie obviously) Im just disappointed that something meant to be a little light humor has been taken and turned around into something 'offending'. maybe Im just young and naive but it depresses me the direction the world is going. This moral and political correctness the we subscribe to these days is going to far in my opinion.
a little fog for thought!
