My Modern Metropolis

What's your favorite children's story? What do you think it means?

I'm fascinated by what sorts of tales we decide to read to kids, and what we intend for them to read. Many times, authors infuse these stories with hidden meanings and metaphors that make them special for even adults to read. Which is your favorite piece, and what intrigues you about it?

I was always a sucker for Curious George stories.
"Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak springs to mind as a favourite from back before I could read. I think I identified strongly with the little protagonist. To this day, when life gets me down I take solace by retreating into myself and either entering someone else's fantasy (reading) or creating my own in my imagination.

I don't dress up in a monster costume, but I do have a kimono jacket that I sometimes wear while reading at home. LOL
I always liked The Giving Tree. I know my kids really liked it. There's no really hidden message. It's pretty straight forward. It's just a great story of loving someone so much you give them all of yourself. Although come to think of it the author was a writer/cartoonist for Playboy & was known to smoke pot, & hinted at psychedelic use, so maybe there was something to it that went over my head, LOLOL
