My big three would be:
Kubrick
Kurosawa
Scorsese
Steven Spielberg, Terry Gilliam, Ridley Scott, David Lynch, Jacques Tati
I'm a huge Quentin Tarantino fan. His movies have such a distinct flavor. I'm also a fan of David Fincher (Fight Club, Benjamin Button, Se7en ), Ridley Scott (Gladiator), Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park), and Mel Gibson (Braveheart).

I'm ashamed to say, I haven't really seen any Akira Kurosawa movies. Definitely on my list of things to do.
Chris Nolan
The Dark Knight was an instant classic in my book.
Wes Anderson.
Baz Luhrmann - He only directed 4 so far i think. And I loved all 4 of them.
Clint Eastwood - Totally underrated.
Quentin Tarantino
David Fincher
Scorsese
1. Miyazaki
2. Kubrick
3. Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkish director)
Old School John Woo, before he came to America and starting making crap.
as long as its a woman....she stands back but knows where to go
I seem to have similar taste to a lot of people who have already posted so I'll vote for one that hasn't popped up yet.

Andrei Tarkovsky anyone?
