How Our Health System Screws Over Women

How Our Health System Screws Over Women:

From the article “So Mulvihill resigned herself to buying private insurance, hoping to put it on a credit card and pay it off at some point in the distant future. Yet, after spending hours calling private insurance companies, she found none would take her. The reason? Private insurers can legally reject pregnant women on the grounds that their pregnancy is a pre-existing condition. While federal law forbids group health plans from playing this sleazy trick, on the individual market, companies face no such restriction. Given the loophole, seemingly all insurers jump through it. Even though not getting prenatal care is a technically a violation of the law (according to family law experts, women could be prosecuted for neglect, though they rarely if ever are), private insurance plans for individuals aren’t required to help them get it.”

WHAT? You know whats good. Make something illegal and then make it impossible for portions of citizens to obey the law. Smart move! You would think that even the most greedy corporate big wigs would feel bad for babies.

I used to use Pandora, but then I got on Last.fm and I like it a lot more. It keeps track of the music you listen to through iTunes or Windows Media Player and suggests new music based on everything you listen to. Its great, and its social network...

I try not to. I will however take advantage of their return policy when I need to buy props or costume pieces for a scene. They will take almost anything that you have a receipt for back, and if you dont have a receipt they will take anything that...

Yes, I do buy things from companies that are responsible. Like Fair Trade Coffee. I also try to avoid products that come form companies that are particularly irresponsible.

My flat mate has been sick and he went to the Doctor who told him he could have swine flu. No one seems to be overly concerned that we are all going to die in the flat. I'm not even sick. So I do think people are over reacting a little.

But not everyone has a family environment where open conversation about sex education can happen.
November 8
Seriously. This sounds like a great idea. I think that sex education is so important. I was given rather poor and inadequate sex education through my high school and I wish that more people were thinking like this.
November 7
I think the attitude of seeing yourself as a "knight" is symptomatic of the sexism I was talking about. The implication of this language and your thought is that women need someone to support and empower by men. You talk as if its now man's job to...

The ideas of Chivalry do unfortunately go back to a time when Women were viewed as objects to battled over and won. And the set of behaviors that we commonly accept as chivalrous do come from a time before woman's liberation. So I would say that c...

The lack of LGBT rights in our country is a civil rights nightmare. I dont think there is ever an inappropriate time to try to promote equality. But I do understand the argument that there are better things, perhaps, that Obama could put energy to...

Not Yet. Maybe if a few years, but not yet. We are involved in two wars and other military action still. Obama has not changed that. We still deny rights to LGBT despite Obama campaigning with ending "Dont Ask Dont Tell". I think he could earn it ...

Queer vs. Christian

This video was done by Susan Gage with the Mickee Faust Club in Tallahassee. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with Susan and Faust the past couple of weeks. Susan's pioneering voice on issues surrounding queer individuals who maintain a dual identity as Queer Christians despite the challenges and persecution that sometimes means enduring is truly inspiring. Check out this video its great! Continue

Our Voices / Ourselves

Last week I had the opportunity to work with world famous performance artist Tim Miller. He came to Tallahassee to perform his new show and lead a small group of us in this workshop to create our own individual solo performance pieces. For those familiar with Theatre of the Oppressed, we talked about and used ideas from Agusto Boal in this process. That kind of work really blurs the line between theatre and theory.
I have long been an opponent of what I sometimes call "masturbating on stage". Or… Continue
