Painting Intoxicated at 100 MPH

It's almost as if Alexandra Pacula paints what she sees while driving drunk at 100 mph. "My work investigates a world of visual intoxication; it captures moments of enchantment, which are associated with urban nightlife," says the New York-based artist born in Poland.

"I am fascinated by the ambiance of the city at night and its seductive qualities. The… Continue

The Glory of Galapagos Underwater

Darek Sepiolo created this stunning seven minute video showcasing the underwater wildlife beneath Galapagos Island. Inspired by Hans Zimmer's melodramatic music, he intentionally changed the lighting in certain frames. "The music is from Dark Knight so I purposely made some shots darker to reflect the music. A bit more drama," he says.

Sepiolo adds: "The [Sony] EX1 worked great. I shot most of the clips with ND1 actually. Regarding the sharpness... it looks… Continue

Discovery Channel Asks: What's Your Discovery?

If there's one television channel that's constantly on in my house, it's Discovery. Deadliest Catch has got to be one of the best shows on television not just because we get to see what one of the most dangerous jobs in the world is like, but because these charismatic crab fishermen let us into their personal lives. (RIP Phil Harris, you were a good… Continue

Astronaut Ice Cream

Freeze dried to survive the trip into outer space, then vacuum sealed for freshness, you can now get your own pack of Astronaut Ice Cream, and eat like they do at 300 km above the earth. Surprisingly delicious, this isn’t the same brand of rations used by NASA’s men and women, but prepared in the same way, and no less novel. Available online in Neopolitan… Continue

Magnificent Multifaceted Sculptures (17 pics)

Born in 1963 in Lyon, France, artist Xavier Veilhan creates multifaceted sculptures that are strikingly modern. Though he works across a variety of mediums, his sculptures stand out because of their jagged edges or brightly lacquered paint. Back in 2009, his work was displayed in the Garden and Royal Court of the Palace of Versailles, including a 50 foot long coach and…

Recent Scenes from Iraq -- the Big Picture

Boston.com has put up a great collection of recent photos from Iraq that show both the ugliness and the hope for a brighter future. The photos are inspiring, sad, amazing, and even bewildering. Some are a little hard to look at. In the photo above students attend class at Mama Ayser, a private school in Baghdad June 28, 2010. Once banned under Saddam Hussein, private schools have flourished in Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion as Iraqis become… Continue
