Bourrasque, by London-based designer Paul Cocksedge, is meant to represent a large collection of papers blowing away in the wind. Made for France's City of Lyon's annual Festival of Lights, each sheet of "paper" is made from a special conductive material that lights up when a current is passed through it. All are the exact size of a standard piece of printer paper and were…

Thought-Provoking Tree Sculptures

Sharon Levy's installation entitled "The Wood" is a group of sculptures that examine trees in a series of different ways. The most striking piece when one enters the room is the massive nine-foot-tall "cookie" or cross-section of a tree. Meticulously painted, this work only resembles an actual tree ring, it's actually made of stretched and painted canvas with carved and painted foam…

Disorienting Spatial Projections

For this trippy installation, artist Peter Koler was inspired by movies such as "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and "Metropolis" where architecture plays an important role in evoking emotions from its viewers. Kogler wanted to change spaces before the viewers' eyes. Using large graphic projections, the walls seem to shift, expand, and move all at once. Quite disorienting, don't you… Continue

Flock of Birds-Inspired Art

With Milan Design Week ending today, no doubt one of their highlights was this mesmerizing installation called “Flylight” which consists of 160 glass tubes that lighten up and respond to the viewer's movement. Inspired by the behavior from a flock of birds and the fascinating patterns they seem to create in the air, the installation is best appreciated not through photos but in person or by video… Continue

"The Planet is Covered by Silvery Sleep" is a magnificently intriguing art installation by Konoike Tomoko. It's of a six-legged wolf who's covered in pieces of mirror and walking in front of hides from its own kind.

Whimsical Art Installation at Art Basel Miami

We've been asked a few times if My Modern Met will be covering Art Basel this year. Though we'd love to check out all of the amazing art, due to time constraints, we're skipping it this year. Hanging Tree Installation (3 pics + video)

This installation, by Japanese artist Shinji Turner-Yamamoto, is incredibly powerful. A hanging tree, with its roots sprawled out, is seen hanging in mid-air inside an abandoned church in Cincinnati. Turner-Yamamoto chose the decrepit church because he liked the marks of decay carved into the architecture by time and nature.

"Hanging Garden" is part of… Continue

Apifera Window Installation: London (6 pics)

Matthew Plummer Fernandez was kindly offered a chance to create a window installation for Selfridges' famous shop window in London. As Matthew began conceptualizing, he noticed that shop windows had similar functions as flowers. That's when he came up with the name, Apifera, a botanical term given to flowers that are specialized in attracting bees. With this in mind he adopted design traits from flowers to make the window as "dynamic and alive” as… Continue
