ArtFinder is a cool website where you can find art that you like, create you own collections, and then share those collections with others via Facebook and Twitter. To be able to search for art you like, though, it is necessary for the images to be properly tagged. That's where all of us come in.
Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg have taken something used for mindless fun and turned it into a high art form. Animated GIFs are usually seen on teenage girls' My Space pages and they're usually full of glitter, unicorns, and flashing text. These two have taken that banal form and used it to create some really beautiful and moving images.…
If you are a science nut, like I am, you absolutely owe it to yourself to go to Florence Italy and spend a day walking around in the Museo Galileo. Just around the corner from the famous Uffizi Gallery, this little museum is filled with the most incredible scientific instruments of the Renaissance. Even if you aren't a science nut, it is impossible to ignore the… Continue
Just came across this nice shop at Etsy by Las Coleccionistas. They sell some great notebooks wrapped in this four-fold poster. I really like the text and photos on this (and I'm a sucker for cool notebooks anyway).
The notebooks open with a text by Joaquim Barceló inside.
Las Coleccionistas are María Revuelta and Núria del Moral,… Continue
David O'Reilly is an Berlin-based (but Irish born) artist who produces some intriguing 3D works. Now he's turned his eye to one of the most recognizable faces in media today: Lady Gaga. Using 3D software to selectively explode the image (similar to this post by Inka) he turns her face into a modern artwork. Prior to… Continue
Surreal worlds that don't exist - and probably shouldn't. That is what Oregon artist Jim Kazanjian creates in his intriguing and oddly disturbing prints.
Jim Kazanjian has been a commercial CGI artist for the past 16 years in television and more recently in game production. He describes his… Continue
On Friday the Westboro Baptist Church staged a protest outside Twitter headquarters in SF. Their disgusting signs were totally upstaged by a brilliant group who gathered carrying signs guaranteed to amuse and befuddle all passersby. Here are some of my favorites.
In Sarasota Florida a group called Team Sandtastic has taken something that many of us did as kids and turned it into an art form (and a business). I came across these guys while doing research for another subject and was transfixed by what they accomplish using a few ordinary rocks. There's no glue or wires here - just patient, thoughtful stacking.…
The Lightsails Project is an interactive installation around the Millstaetter lake in Austria. Created by Söhne & Partner Architects in association with Karl Sodek these cionic towers are meant to guide visitors to the exhibits set around the lake. But they are more than just signposts: the towers draw their energy from their surroundings are also… Continue
This flowchart from the 1940s tells you exactly how to get your movie made. It all stems from the IDEA. As you can see, ideas come from either "Play," "Short Story or Novel," "Newspaper Story or Current Event," "Original Story," "Magazine Article," or "Historical Incident." A critical connection off the left side however is the "Vice President in Charge of Production." He can definitely make things happen! I wonder what the same chart… Continue
Something is not quite right about these images from the exhibition at the Centro di Cultura Contemporanea Strozzina in Firenze Italy. But that's OK, because they are meant to be that way. The exhibit "Manipulating Reality: How Images Redefine the World" is designed specifically to explore how modern images can be manipulated to redefine the reality. The image above for example is NOT of a model. It is actually an image shot from a helicopter…
In this wicked video from Philips corporation we see a concept of LED tattoos embedded in human skin that come alive when touched. This concept is based on real work done at the University of Pennsylvania. Scientists there are working on silicon-and-silk implantable devices that would act like a LED screen sitting just under the surface of the skin. The images would appear as a tattoo and be fully customizable. The silk substrate onto which the chips are mounted… Continue
This totally cool video covers four semesters of geometry and trig in just over 4 minutes. But that's not what it really is about! Instead it uses the math and the beautiful music to illustrate the emotional relationships between two marbles - one yellow and one blue. The video is by Britta Johnson and… Continue
The first museum in Italy to be devoted to modern works has finally opened in Rome. The MAXXI formally known as the National Museum of the XXI Century Arts. The facility has been under construction for a while and has not been warmly accepted by Italy's artistic elite. The country of course is home to an incredible bounty of classical art and architecture. This new museum, devoted to the avant garde, seems like it could be out of place.…
The unusual artwork of David Buckingham is on display at the Packer Schopf gallery in Chicago until November 14th. Buckingham is from LA. He goes out to junkyards and into the desert where he scavenges for metal that he cuts, welds, and recycles into new and far more interesting forms. Here are a few of his pieces that I really like. If you want to see more go here or better yet take… Continue
Many of you have seen MUTO a grafitti-style animation created by Blu (blogged about here) and you may have also seen the stop-motion animations produced by David Ellis. Now they have collaborated on this piece of performance art. Filmed over ten days in Italy during the FAME festival it represents a huge amount of… Continue

The Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) is located just outside the men’s room in the basement of the Dedham Community Theatre near Boston. If you can't make it to visit that illustrious location then you can now, thanks to the magic of the Internet, view the collection online.
"Art too bad to be Ignored" is their motto. I have to agree that some of these items make me doubt the sanity of the… Continue
With this great quote from Anchorman I found Katie Kutthroat's wonderful needlework shop on Etsy. She sells laugh out loud needlepoints that you probably won't find hanging on your Grandma's kitchen wall.…
This video depicts the famous chess game between 13 year-old Bobby Fischer and Donald Byrne (then the US Chess champion) but that is not what makes it so cool. What's really cool are the custom made pieces depicting iconic moments of history from the 20th century. From the Titanic to Sputnik to the Unabomber's cabin they're all there. See how many you can recognize!
This was created by Constantin and Laurene Boym. Here is their description of… Continue

I have always loved aquariums. I have a large one myself but it is nothing compared to these. Each of these aquariums is a true work of art. It takes as much design thought to create one of these unique aquariums as it would to create any other work of art or architecture. It may take even more since these must provide and maintain a living environment. The tank above was created by Pieter van Suijlekom and is 6 meters long. You can read more about…
