Stained Glass Watertower Sparkles Along Brooklyn's Skyline

Born in L.A. and now based in New York, artist Tom Fruin created a recent installation that adds a little sparkle to the already dazzling Brooklyn skyline. His monumental sculpture, Watertower, is built out of salvaged plexiglass and steel, and is mounted high upon a water tower platform located in DUMBO, Brooklyn. The mosaic design consists of about 1,000 scraps of plexiglass…

Paper Maps Folded to Form Children's Clothing

Maps are all around us. They offer us guidance through city streets, subways stops, and across the globe. They feature incredible detail, vivid colors, and generally attractive designs to easily communicate geographic information. French artist Elisabeth Lecourt has taken the beauty and concept of a map one step further with Les Robes Géographiques.

The Imperfections is a unique fashion piece designed by artist Sopi Su. The Taiwan-born and New York-based artist was inspired to create this piece after reading a book by the Japanese author Sei Shonagon. Shonagon wrote down her observations of life during the 11th century in The Pillow…

Daydreams Come Alive Atop Silhouetted Heads

Let your eyes wander across these silhouettes and get lost in the creative confusion of artist Daphna Naim’s series entitled Daydreams. The Israel-based graphic designer and illustrator takes the flattened black shape of a person’s silhouette and transforms it into a tiny narrative that runs along the base of each person’s form. The stories range from a tree growing…

Behind the Scenes of The Empire Strikes Back

I'm sure you'd agree that the Star Wars film series is a cultural phenomenon! There was probably a bit of pressure for all involved to follow up the first movie with a second and third. These photographs show a bit of the fun that actors Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher had while creating the second, The Empire Strikes Back, a 1980 production. Included in…

Hunting Steel Birds in the Sky

This photo series, entitled Bird Hunter, does not involve the type of hunting that you might typically imagine. Spanish art director and photographer Dani Garcia Sarabia spends his time pursuing not wildlife, as one would generally expect from a hunter, but rather, powerful winged airplanes in the sky.

Sarabia describes his process for the project: “Waiting since before the…

Crafty Handmade Crochet Portraits

Using a very traditional crochet technique, Scottish artist Jo Hamilton creates these very non-traditional portraits. The artist has been crocheting and knitting since the age of six, thanks to the teachings and inspirations of her grandmother and mother. Dramatically Luminating Golden Angels

The angelic, mystical forms by artist Steven Daluz remind me of paintings from the 15th and 16th century. There is a sense of human emotion in the dramatic gestures and golden orange hues of each piece. He uses metal leaf, chemically-induced patinas, oil, and other mixed media to evoke the moody tones of his enigmatic subjects.

Daluz says, “I am compelled to do work that conjures…
