Urban HotSpot - Winston's: West Hollywood

Winston's is a small, low-key bar that isn't overly impressive but definitely has a lot of class. Used as a venue for the show Entourage, Winston's is so hard to spot from the street that it's almost like this place is a secret. Inside, the decor shoots for the classic 1920's American vibe and consists of black leather benches, ornate oil paintings, lots of small mirrors, and a small vintage crystal chandelier at the center of the bar. The bar can… Continue

Introducing the Tata Nano - cheapest car and enviornmentalist's nightmare

THE TATA NANO

The 50 mpg Tata Nano, aka the people's car, is a proposed car introduced by India's Tata Motors at the 9th annual Auto Expo on January 10, 2008 in New Delhi, India. With a $3000 price-tag, this snap- together car could be just what Indians need and can actually afford, (the middle class household income in India starts at $6000.) But when millions of these tiny little cars hit the streets, it could paralyze the… Continue

Urban HotSpot - The Edison: Downtown LA

There is no doubt that the Edison is one of the most dynamic bars in all of Southern California. Previously downtown LA's first private power plant, the Edison provides an industrial rich atmosphere in a world class lounge. As you enter and go down the long grand staircase you get the sense of how large Edison really is. The vast space has plenty of seating, two long bars, and 1920's music accompanied by silent film that is projected onto the walls.… Continue

Urban HotSpot: The Garter - Venice

Living in Playa Vista and driving on Lincoln Blvd. all the time, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this mellow, low-key bar was so close to home. A little bit nicer than a dive bar, the Garter has a full bar, pool table, an upstairs-rooftop chill area, and an upstairs room with a DJ, two comfortable looking beds and some plush couches. I wouldn't recommend taking a first date here, but it may be the perfect place to hang out with friends and… Continue

Urban HotSpot - Medusa Lounge: Westlake, Silver Lake

As I walked into the Medusa Lounge I immediately felt like I walked into a classy goth lounge; the place was decked out with arched stone, small black chandeliers, stained glass and intricate wood carvings. Much of Medusa's decor, such as iron gates and a huge crystal chandelier, was collected from movie sets over the years. After dinner hours, Medusa continues to serve cocktails to the hip late-night lounge crowd. Cocktails are $8 and parking can be… Continue

Street Art: Pose

"4 Revok"

Hailing from the Windy City, Pose started to graffiti in 1992. Although he tried to quit in 2003, he was unsuccessful and has continued to graffiti both nationally and internationally. About four years ago, Pose helped found a creative agency called Supervision and has continued to design original artwork campaigns for just about every corporation and ad agency. Here's some of his street graffiti.

Urban HotSpot - Bar Lubitsch: West Hollywood

Bar Lubitsch (pronounced lou-bitch) is a Russian styled vodka bar located in Weho. Inside, red walls are decked out with old school Russian propaganda, antique mirrors, and little red lamps which make it feel like you're really in Moscow. There is are three areas to hang out: an outside patio for smokers, a bar area room, and a dance floor/lounge in the back. I really liked the place because it really had its own unique character and… Continue

Sunday Brunch @ the Hotel Bel-Air

Have a special occasion coming up or just looking to surprise your special someone with an unforgettable Sunday brunch? Hotel Bel-Air is the perfect place to go! Not too commercialized or trendy, Bel-Air does well to preserve its eloquence and serenity; the gardens within the hotel only add to its tranquility.

Not a buffet type of brunch, Hotel Bel-Air offers a three course meal with lots of choices. Their attention to detail is evident not… Continue

Urban Hotspot - The Vista Theatre

The Vista is an ancient Egyptian designed theatre that was built back in the 1920's but was recently renovated and now has a huge screen and new digital surround sound system. The theatre holds multiple functions: audiences have the privilege to watch newly released movies, indie films, and live concerts. The reason that this venue is so awesome is the quality of sound, spacious legroom, plush seats, and the classic vintage ambiance. I watched a show… Continue

Urban Hot Spot - Elevate Lounge: Downtown LA

The reason that Elevate stands out from the rest is the 360 degree view of Downtown LA. The penthouse that lies on the 21st floor is classy, upscale, and the perfect venue to catch up with friends or meet new people. There is a dance floor to get your groove on, with music ranging from hip hop to 80's pop.

I would recommend going on a Thursday because it'll be less hectic. $12 for a cocktail, $8 for a beer and valet parking is $7. Depending… Continue

THE WEEKEND EXPERIENCE - MOVIES OPENING 6/20

THE MOVIE I'D TAKE A CHANCE ON

EXPIRED

This one may be the wild-card for the weekend. Expired is the story of a girl named Claire whose life is consumed by taking care of her stroke-afflicted mother. As a meter maid, she unexpectedly meets another parking officer named Jay, and their awkward attraction creates a funny yet compelling story. The Sundance Film Festival raved, "We love cinema that makes us laugh, cry, or… Continue

Grunion Run! What? Where? When?

California grunion are small silvery fish about 5 to 6 inches long found only along the coast of southern California and northern Baja California. Grunion are famous for their very unusual mating ritual. At very high tides the females come up on sandy beaches and dig their tails into the sand to lay their eggs. A male then wraps himself around the female to deposit his sperm. For the next ten days the grunion eggs remain hidden in the sand, but at the next set of high… Continue
