An outdoor pavilion where you can find some shade? Not quite. Called the s_pavilion, it's a structure made out of 200 unusable Speedo swimming suits that was created by the Chelsea College of Art & Design for this year's Chelsea College undergraduate summer show and the London Festival of Architecture.
In order to challenge students to explore various design issues such as sustainability, methods of production and use of materials, Speedo gave them 600 LZR racer swimming suits to see what they could do. As you may know, the LZR racer is one of the most technologically advanced performance suit ever produced but was recently made obsolete by changes in competition rules. (Remember Michael Phelps wearing one at the 2008 Olympics?) In order to re-use these previously manufactured suits, the group took the material to an architectural scale, creating a very cool art installation for all to enjoy.
What's more exciting than seeing the pavilion complete, is seeing how it's made.
If you'd like to see the s_pavilion, it will be a part of the London Design Festival from September 18-26 and temporarily
on view at the Cass Sculpture Foundation near West Sussex.
