A Great Japanese BBQ Dining Experience: Gyu-Kaku

Let me just get it out there. I love food. Nothing makes me happier than eating a nice fat meal. Tony and I were talking last weekend about Gyu-Kaku and I had heard about this place from various people but I had no idea that this place would be THAT GOOD. On Yelp I'm a solid four star giver - the places I frequent are usually pretty good...just not knock my socks off, 5 star good,...not like Gyu-Kaku. Why was it so good? First the food is just tasty - garlic noodles, skirt steak, galbi (with garlic topping) and mixed vegetables were all great. It's like they took classic Korean bbqing and made it eons better. More than anything, though, they make it a dining experience. You cook your own meat and vegetables on a charcoal grill. Now I know a lot of people would say that it kinda defeats the purpose of going out but NO! This way you get to cook your food to your exact taste. Burnt!? You got it! Raw! Go for it! Here we go again in pictures. Table set up. First thing you notice is the hot charcoal grill in the middle of the table and the little dish for the sauces...

three types of dipping sauce - sweet, soy saucey, and hickory-ish...

notice how the meat comes out nicely presented...

everyone going for it...

happy and full...

and of course, they had the melon gum (they not only took our galbi, they took our gum!)

Overall, one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Don't go in with high expectations, though, I don't want you to be disappointed. We walked away paying about $30 a person for a lot of meat, noodles, some rice dishes and beer. Who Should Go?: People who enjoy cooking their own food, their way. Tips: *There is part of a large chain from Japan (800 of these there) and a lot of locations in CA, NY, and Hawaii (find the closest one to you on their website) *Park either at a metered spot on the street or walk from Westside Pavilion. *I hear they have great happy hour specials! *Make reservations for sure. Hours: Mon-Thu 12:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Mon-Thu 5:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. Fri-Sat 12:00 p.m.-11:30 p.m. Sun 5:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Gyu-Kaku (Yelp) 10925 W Pico Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90064 310.234.8641

  • I love Gyu Kaku. I've been going there for years. There are tons of locations. The garlic beef is one of my favorites. AAAND they have a really good pesto chicken. YUM.
They have a fondue type dessert to do too.
