Annie and I were looking for a good Italian place around town tonight. We decided to search on Yelp and found Sapori Ristorante which was rated 4.5 stars and right down the street! Located in Marina Del Rey, it was nice to visit a hidden restaurant that's also a hub for many yachts and sailboats in the area.
Sapori is small and can host a little over a hundred people, but it's the size that made it possible for the waiters to always be available at our every need. The service was impeccable and the owner was knowledgeable and helpful in making our decisions.
Annie had the Risotto alla Pescatora (above) - Italian style risotto with fresh seafood. (calamari, shrimp, & mussel) She thought the dish was full of flavor, but a bit on the seafoody side.
I had the Penne del Cacciatore - Shaved veal, beef and Italian sausage sautéed with mixed herbs in a red wine, Marsala sauce served over penne pasta. I thought it was pretty good.
For desert we had the mimosa lemon cake. It was really light, perfectly sweet, and went well with the best black coffee I've ever had.
As we were eating, we noticed that everyone and their mom ordered the Prosciutto e Melone -
Parma ham with cantaloupe melon. It looked like a weird combo, but after watching so many people eating it, we will definitely try it next time.
Overall we enjoyed dining at the Marina, thought Sapora had excellent service and their food tasted like authentic Italian. We agreed that the restaurant aims to please more mature palates and may not be as enjoyable for the Olive Garden loving crowd. As for the 4 star yelp rating? We give it 3.5.
