Forgive me for being away for a day. Sam and I made it safely to Boston yesterday afternoon and then zipped on over to Cambridge as a pit stop to visit Daddy Bob and Mom Judy in Maine. (You are probably thinking - a city girl like you in the woods?! Yeah, you and me both.) Daddy Bob and and Mom Judy are my sister Grace's husband's parents - they've built an awesome eco-friendly house in the woods. (I'm talking solar panels, people!) We flew into Boston and stayed a full day in Cambridge to meet with Seth Young at the Berkman Center. A long, detailed post on that a bit later. (You know I have my work cut out for me tonight!) After trying to figure out which hotel we were going to stay at we settled on Charles Hotel right in Harvard Square. Though it wasn't the most modern, it was the best bang for the buck. (We also looked at XV Beacon and Nine Zero Hotel.) What was so great about Charles Hotel? First, the hotel keeps classic New England design but mixes it with some awesome modern amenities. Let me show you in pictures! From the outside, you can see that it's a red brick building blending perfectly with its surroundings:
Lobby had leather chairs and sofas with interesting paintings:
Couldn't get away from the quilts:
By the stairs there was a big shelf of books...I, of course, being the cynical person I am..had to ask - are those books real? Can you actually read those? Woo hoo - the answer was Yes!
Now going up to the room...bathroom had a tv set into the mirror....very nice...reminded me of THE hotel in Vegas.
And how can you go wrong with Origins bath products? Nice touch!
As you can kind of see from this picture, the bedroom had that classic red/white/blue theme going on...
l liked this oversized black and white chalkboard. Artist Doug Hilson created a series of four drawings, themed around university community and intellectual life. The room also had a custom created professor's chair, and a hanging peg board that is reminiscent of a New England boarding school.
Things you couldn't see in pictures - the wonderful service that we felt the moment we checked in. Totally hassle free experience - we checked in, in literally, 5 minutes, check-out was a breeze and every employee we met greeted us with a smile. Good service can make it or break it for me and this really made it. Who Should Go? People who want to take a trip to Boston but not stay downtown. People who enjoy being amongst college kids cause it makes them feel young (I swear I shaved 10 yrs off my life..too bad they came right back on). People who like good food 'cause they have some great eats in here! Tip: Valet parking and self parking is the same price at $34 (pricey but understood). Thanks, Charles Hotel for a super fabulous time. Now on to the restaurant posts! Charles Hotel (TripAdvisor) One Bennett Street Cambridge, MA 02138 P. 800.882.1818
