iPhone + Membership Cards...Smart or Silly?

Now, as you can tell, I can be pretty opinionated when it comes to certain subjects - advertising, marketing, design...but when it comes to technology I'm usually left wondering - is this smart or just plain silly?
Some guy found out a way to make your wallet slimmer - scan your membership cards into our iPhone and then create an album in there for fast retrieval. Apparently, the bar codes scan just fine.
