Urban HOTspot - Babe's & Ricky's Inn: Jefferson Park

When I saw that Babe's and Ricky's Inn was rated the #2 nightlife venue in LA on Yelp, I had to see what the commotion was all about. Located in Jefferson Park, it's the oldest blues club in LA and has been around for almost 40 years. Every Monday night is open-mic night, and the band gets continually mixed up as each guitarist, drummer, singer, and harmonica player takes a turn on stage. The cover charge is $8. We got there at 8:30pm, left at midnight, and every single performer we saw blew us away.

Living legend, old timer Mickey Champion made a couple appearances. She sang with Billy Holiday back in the day. I've never seen a woman her age belt out the blues like her. She doesn't even use a microphone. Definitely a highlight and a memorable experience.

At 10:30pm on Mondays, they serve a soul food buffet which is included in the cover charge. The lineup: Fried chicken drumsticks (good size), spicy Louisiana sausage, hush puppies (friend cornbread), collard greens, green beans, black eye peas and potato salad. YUM! Everything was really good! There is a two drink minimum that's not enforced and beers are $3 to $5 while merlot is also available.

The crowd was surprisingly diverse - an eclectic LA scene. Everyone in the house, including us, really appreciated Babe's and Ricky's Inn as the authentic blues bar it is. Highly recommended to go at least once.

Tips:
-Not located in the best neighborhood, I would recommend going with friends and being cautious.
-Bring cash - they don't like credit
-From what I've read, Mama Laura at the door will make a fool out of you if you don't pay for your lady friend. She is great though and definitely adds a lot of character to the place.
-Reservations are recommended. The place fits about 120 max.

Who should go:
-Person looking for a place to take a date
-People with an appreciation of music, specifically the blues
-Soul food lovers
-People that like to experience different cultures
