A Paraglider's Breathtaking Views - George Steinmetz (17 photos)

With the ability to pilot a motorized paraglider, photographer George Steinmetz captures breathtaking shots of the Earth below. This experimental aircraft enables him to capture unique images of the world, inaccessible by traditional aircraft and most other modes of transportation.

A regular contributor to National Geographic and GEO Magazines, he has explored subjects ranging from the remotest stretches of Arabia’s Empty Quarter to the unknown tree people of Irian Jaya.

Steinmetz was born in Beverly Hills in 1957 and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Geophysics. He began his career in photography after hitchhiking through Africa for 28 months. He currently lives in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, with his wife, Wall Street Journal editor Lisa Bannon, their daughter, Nell, and twin sons John and Nicholas.

The Korowai and Kombai live in tree houses that stand in clearings they have carved out of the forest... Although slowly dying out, there was still cannibalism in the area. Gerrit believed it to be part of their criminal justice system, as most of the tree-dwelers did not believe in natural death. The Korowai believed that most deaths were caused by sorcery, and they would try to find out who the sorcerer was to kill and eat them.

I like it.
