Amazingly Realistic Figures Sculpted with Marble

It is hard to believe that these incredibly realistic pieces are made out of marble! Elegy on Resistance is a series of sculptures that look soft enough to touch. Sydney-based artist Alex Seton is a talented sculptor who molds the classic substance into all kinds of unexpected forms. In this collection, there is an essence of loneliness that emanates from the solitary, faceless figure and the single articles of clothing placed on hangars or tossed on the floor.

Seton chooses to work with marble because he is interested in the traditions and history that it holds within the art world. The malleable material is challenging to work with, but, with great determination and a skilled hand, a successful artist can produce durable pieces that will last across centuries. The artist's bio states, "A central concern is the nature of monument and the way in which we consecrate objects, people, and moments in time. By memorializing everyday objects such as inflatable toys, beds, hooded jumpers, and flags in stone, Seton questions the reverence of both material and subject."
