Using delicate materials like layers of glass or paper, artist Ardan zmenoglu redefines everyday objects in her visually complex sculptures. In these tree sculptures, the Turkish artist breaks the object down into rows of hand-painted glass. A single sheet appears to be completely abstract, however, by combining the fragmented parts into repetitive rows, she gives new life to the tree which changes appearance based on the position of the viewer.
In all of her work, zmenoglu investigates how the permanence or ephemerality of images throughout history have affected human culture. By challenging expectations and combining unexpected mediums, she invites viewers to look at the world with a new perspective.
“Whether commenting on the historical durability or transience of an image or sculpting with such fragile media as wire, glass slides, or tree branches, my approach to my art and its sources has been and will always be contemporary in the extreme: my investigation into image coexists with aesthetic gestures that challenge, provoke, and invite,” says zmenoglu.
