Artist and Animator David O'Reilly - Lady Gaga, U2, and more

David O'Reilly is an Berlin-based (but Irish born) artist who produces some intriguing 3D works. Now he's turned his eye to one of the most recognizable faces in media today: Lady Gaga. Using 3D software to selectively explode the image (similar to this post by Inka) he turns her face into a modern artwork. Prior to this outing O'Reilly has done his most notable work in animation. He produced the animated short Please Say Something which won the Golden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival last year. This film tells the tale of a very strained relationship between a cat and a mouse.

He has also done animation work for U2, namely the video for their song "I'll Go Crazy If I don't Go Crazy Tonight" which you can see below.

He also did this haunting piece called Black Lake. I love how the video deconstructs itself partway through. It reminds me that everything we see is constructed from unseen parts and controlled by basic rules of behavior, just like software.

I first learned of his work from this article on Nowness. You can see a few more of his Lady Gaga portraits there. David's website and blog is here. I think David O'Reilly is someone we'll be seeing a lot more of in the future.

Thanks for this post Mark. I love David O'Reilly. The U2 is my fave.

@Eugene & Mark. I've heard from a lot of my friends that Vimeo's often don't work the first try. Even when it's fully loaded. It's the strangest thing. They usually have to refresh the screen and try again.

The vid works fine for me. It looks really weird (on purpose) until you get further into it. Go in about 20 seconds and you'll see it is fine.
