Artistic Travel Photography (20 photos)

Ayutthaya, Thailand

He calls himself "a travel junkie, caught between the dream world and the real world." Indeed, look through Arjun Purkayastha's portfolio and you'll notice two things. One, that he's been to more countries than possibly anyone you've ever known and two, Purkayastha has a distinct style that makes him seem more like an artist than a photographer. With a passion for both travel and fine art photography, he marries the two in a way that you have to see to fully understand.

When asked to define the phrase "travel junkie," here is what Purkaysatha told us: "I am addicted to travel. It makes me more creative as I am inspired by the unfamiliar and the unknown. Travel makes me want to create images which tell a story. To me, photography is fiction. An imaginary tale that I am narrating. A figment of my imagination. An exaggerated moment that I see with my Third Eye. My work is about bringing out the moment that I ‘see’ and want to ‘show’. More often than not, it is not close to what ‘reality’ was when I took it."

Purkayastha picked up digital photography back in 2005 and since then has been pursuing it, not as his full time profession, but as his "full time passion." His work is held internationally by private collectors and his photos have been published and featured in magazines like Condé Nast Traveller, B&W Magazine and Better Photography.

Here, we've put together 20 of our favorite photos from his portfolio. Notice the strong emphasis on color and composition.

What tips could this travel photographer give to the rest of us? "Get up early, stay out late. Be friendly. Don't take the photos that others are taking. Edit and review your work each evening. Enjoy the travel as much as the photography!"

  • Photo labelled East Coast Park, Singapore is fairly obviously Sydney Harbour Bridge.
  • We can talk all day about color, composition, light, saturation, even the use of digital darkroom techniques. But in the end, is it compelling or not? Does it affect you enough to wish it was you behind the camera or not, right? Personally, these shots manage to get a great narrative across, there is no need to make perfect something that is true. To say it's not technically proficient (if indeed someone feels that is the case) is missing the point. If I really want technically proficient, I'd look to something like food photography, where that is expected to be textbook perfect for specific reasons.
  • @Anthony Totally get that. Thanks for the props! :)
  • @Alice,
As you said, it's a taste question.
but i can't say yes when i think no.
Usually it's a yes for your selection :)
  • @Anthony I appreciate your opinion but I respectfully disagree. I think there's a beautifully artistic element to these that you can't define. We are very selective when we choose what we post. I only write about things that move me. I understand we're not always going to have the same taste, however. That being said, thanks for your opinion. It's good to know what others think.
  • Not for me. These shots don't desserve MMM and don't have the quality level on this website.
they aren't made with the right light (check sky in Greece) and they don't bring anything, Thailand shot isn't readable , and nothing happen in India, except pushing saturation... Sorry, need more practice...
    MMM Should be more selective.
Sure the photographer could make much more better shots by waiting a bit more and forget Photoshop...
    Best regards,
    Anthony
