Bride and Groom Honor Their Grandmothers by Having Them as Flower Girls at Their Wedding

A wedding’s flower girl is a position often held by someone under the age of 10, but the recent nuptials of Josh and Maggie Wakefield offered a welcome change to the title—the couple chose to honor their grandmas on the big day by asking them to be co-flower girls. And if the photos shot by Ashley Elizabeth Photography are any indication, the two had a fantastic time playing the part. They walked down the aisle in matching dresses, each smiling as they sprinkled the ground with white blooms.

For Maggie, asking her grandmother Joyce made perfect sense given their tight bond. “She is like a second mother to me,” the bride told The Huffington Post. “I have so many fond memories of my sister and I sleeping over at my grandmother’s house as children making homemade sugar cookies. My grandparents have been a huge support in my life and I learned to really value their opinions and stories.”

Likewise, Josh has a close relationship with his grandma Drue. “She has been a huge influence in Josh’s life,” Maggie explained. “She is one of the most caring, gentle and thoughtful women that I know.”

The two important ladies were elated to be a part of the bridal party. “Immediately after we asked them, a big smile formed on their faces.” They had a great time at the wedding, celebrating until the very end of the night. It also gave Maggie something to look forward to for the future. “Seeing them [grandmother and grandfather] dance together just warmed my heart and all I could think about is that one day that will be Josh and me.”

Here are some more photos from the joyous occasion:

The brooch attached to wedding bouquet held special meaning for the bride. In 2013, her father passed away from colon cancer, so the subtle adornment was a way to honor him. Maggie’s grandfather Ronald Sr.—her dad’s father—walked her down the aisle.
