Hypnotic Film Transforms Real Weather Satellite Data Into a Living Portrait of Earth

Digital artist and filmmaker Seán Doran turned real satellite data from Earth’s atmosphere into Water World, a hypnotic film created from 2,500 infrared images captured by the GOES-16 weather satellite in late September 2024. Released through his independent project Cosma, the film transforms scientific observations of water vapor drifting above the Western Hemisphere into a cinematic portrait of Earth. At first glance, Water World looks more like a painting than satellite imagery.

Hubble Space Telescope Celebrates 36th Anniversary With Stunning Image of Trifid Nebula

Last month, on April 24, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope marked an exciting milestone: its 36th anniversary. To celebrate, the telescope once again set its sights on the Trifid Nebula, a star-forming region located about 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. Hubble had captured the area 29 years earlier, in 1997, but its newest photograph of Trifid offers an even more mesmerizing glimpse into the iconic nebula.

Watch Artemis II Astronaut Deliver an Uplifting Easter Message From Outer Space

The crew of Orion on NASA’s Artemis II mission spent Easter Sunday in outer space. As the four astronauts barrel toward the moon, their thoughts are still with Earth. Mission pilot Victor Glover shared his feelings about the holiday and how he views being in space versus being on Earth. (The two are surprisingly similar.) The uplifting message has resonated with many people at a time of renewal at the start of spring.
