Spectacular Photos Celebrate the Convergence of Art, Science, and Engineering at Beakerhead 2016

Once again, Calgary has successfully hosted Beakerhead—an excellent, immersive event celebrating a smashup of art, science, and engineering. The 4th annual festivities, which ran for five consecutive days last week from September 14-18, boasted an uproarious good time with over 60 distinctive events on the agenda. Attendees were treated to a number of thrilling happenings that ranged from musical performances to hands-on culinary events to interactive art experiences.

This year, Beakerhead also unveiled the highly anticipated premiere of BASS Ship—an immersive, fully interactive audio-visual installation that invites visitors to step inside a giant ship and “become a part of an experiment.” Every person that entered the 30-foot-high vessel became a member of the crew, on a mission to interact with extraterrestrial life through a series of decoding tasks via visual cues from the ship’s switchboards and control panels.

In addition to its new interactive experiences, Beakerhead’s main event known as Beakernight returned, delighting event-goers with an evening full of quirky surprises. The streets of Bridgeland were illuminated with lights and performances in this massive outdoor gallery of art and engineering, offering people of all ages a multi-sensory experience of interactive artworks, live music, a pedal-powered brain, a can-crushing cow, a human-sized hamster wheel, and much more. This year also presented the international public premiere of Calgary’s own Blazin’ Lily Gals and their fire-breathing botany

All in all, Beakerhead continues to out-do itself each year. We can’t wait to see what next year has in store, but for now, here are some of our favorite photos from Beakerhead in 2016. Check out their Flickr stream to see even more.
