Beautifully Detailed Graphite Drawings Blur Lines of Reality

At first glance, it seems like these images might be fuzzy photographs. However, upon closer inspection, the graphite strokes of artist Ethan Murrow reveal themselves in the form of various shades of gray. The Boston-based artist often finds his inspiration from still imagery collected from collaborative films and photography that he creates with his wife, Vita. He then transforms that source material into these gorgeous large-scale, whimsical graphite drawings.

In much of his work, the strong fictional narratives “focus on characters as outrageous innovators and absurd explorers capturing a sense of adventure, satire, fun and defeat.” Murrow explains, “These are cautionary tales, cynical nods to the pitfalls of egotism and obsessive drive.” The dramatic interpretations of life appear in the extraordinary shading and detailed lines that Murrow achieves using just one single medium. The artist produces strange and theatrical details throughout each artwork that merge fact with his own imagination, and blur the lines between reality and fantasy.
