He gave us the shivers with his
beautiful Brooklyn blizzard photos. He gently nudged us, daring us to venture out into the
cold rain. He even inspired us to
visit Japan again to explore the country with a new set of eyes. And now, Navid Baraty is our guide to an old, abandoned copper mine, where he's invited us find beauty in the abandoned.
Located in Kennecott, Alaska, this mine is Baraty's favorite place in Alaska to hike up to. "The mine is in a very remote location about 175 miles from Valdez, beside the Kennicott Glacier," he says. "The mine was in operation from 1911 until it was eventually abandoned in 1938.
"Many of the rocks around the area are very green from their high copper consistency. It's no wonder the area was chosen for mining."

When I asked Navid to tell us what it's like to visit the mine, here is what he shared, "It was a pretty incredible feeling being up there. It felt so remote and isolated, and you were just surrounded in every direction by such vastness of natural beauty. A storm had just passed through so the air was so clean and crisp."
Don't Baraty's photos make you want to find beauty in the abandoned?
