Capturing Surreal Elegance in Motion by Brooke Shaden

Capturing motion in a still image, when done successfully, can result in something that stretches out beyond the frames of the photograph and evokes a response from its audience. In some cases, movement is displayed in abstract streaks that have the power to invigorate a spectator. Other forms of effectively emotive motion in photography present far more subtle movements, like in the works of Los Angeles-based photographer Brooke Shaden.

Shaden is not a motion photographer by trade, but she manages to capture the movements of the feminine form in hauntingly beautiful ways. With just a slight extension of the hand, each of the photographer's models are transformed into ballerinas. The delicate motion featured in each shot from the talented photographer's portfolio varies in the form of body movement, billowing dresses, and windswept hair. Whether these women are ballerinas or not, they emit the elegance of dancers in surreal environments, incorporating the beauty of motion wherever they go.
