Painter Uses Photography to Create Fantastic Floating Globes

In these pieces by visual artist Catherine Nelson, elaborately concocted landscapes take the form of creative, otherwordly globes. Based in Australia, Nelson is trained as a painter but has also worked extensively in visual effects for movies like Harry Potter and Moulin Rouge. After living and traveling around the world and mastering her artistic skills, she now dedicates her time to creating personal projects that draw on a combination of these talents.

Future Memories is a series of twenty floating globes in which Nelson meticulously merges details from her nature photography using digital techniques and a painterly eye. The results are these fascinating globes that feature differing foliage, animals, and weather, and evoke certain seasons and moods. The artist says, "When I embraced the medium of photography, I felt that taking a picture that represented only what was within the frame of the lens wasn't expressing my personal and inner experience of the world around me. With the eye and training of a painter and with years of experience behind me in film visual effects, I began to take my photos to another level."
