My Modern Metropolis

Newcastle artist Tom French has a skill for figurative drawing. Carefully, he combines photorealism and surrealism to create beautiful charcoal drawings...of skulls! His profile on Flickr shares, “French’s work often treads the fine line between the beautiful and unsettling, combining technically tight, classical charcoal drawings with carefree, loose and ostensibly unfinished abstract forms.” What do you think of these daring pieces? Did it take you a second to notice the skulls?

Beautiful work. I love the use of positive and negative space and excellent accuracy with the charcoal.
