Clever Design: A Traffic Light for the Color Blind (3 pics)

A trio of South Korean designers, Ji-youn Kim, Soon-young Yang, and Hwan-ju Jeon, have come up with a clever concept called the Uni-Signal, a traffic light which combines color and positioning with shapes to indicate when it's appropriate to stop and go.

The light aims to avoid the dangers caused by colorblind drivers or foreigners who don’t know the local ways of the road. It does this by changing the shapes of the colored lights. Instead of using three circles, the red light is now a triangle and the green light is a square. The amber lamp remains round and central, just as it always was.

I didn't ever think that a red triangle is more effective than a circle one...but it is!

I think it would've made more sense if the stop signal, as in the red light, would've been the square and that the go signal, the green light, would've been the triangle. Look at it this way, today there are so many people who use mediaplayers, stream things on the internet, and other sort or things, where the triangle always represents the button of play and the square representing pause or stop.

I thought that was the point of always having the lights in the same order; red, orange, green. I also thought that colorblind people can get their licenses now. Never-the-less, I still like the idea.

this would be great...my colourblind friend can finally get his license if they implement this. Such a simple solution, it's surprising no one has thought of this sooner.
