My Modern Metropolis

Starting tonight, September 17, and continuing for two more consecutive nights, the Colosseum in Rome will be on fire! Not a real fire, mind you, but an artistic one involving an incredible video installation.

Why the coliseum? The artists want people to think about social and cultural challenges. As the website states, "The Coliseum is the symbol of a cultural heritage that has lasted through time. The symbolic inferno that the artists enact has the aim of making us think about what the loss of our cultural patrimony would mean. And through this blazing fire they intend to make us aware of our responsibility, to provoke in us primary instinctive reactions, and to make us think. The Coliseum is also the symbol of Imperial Rome, the city's emblem and the custodian of a complex history which, for the collective imagination, mixes together magnificence, power, and cruelty."

The artists behind this video-installation are Thyra Hilden from Denmark and Pio Diaz from Argentina.

@Mark:Unfortunately yes!!
Coliseum on Fire ends tonight but certainly you'll find many other things unsightly;). Scattered throughout the city there are statues of Jorge Jiménez Deredia and if you like the contemporary art there is the Maxxi!
