Now that the 2013 Academy Award nominees have been announced, audiences are quick to judge the movies that have made the cut for several of the categories, the biggest being Best Picture. One critic that chimes in each year is the comedy site CollegeHumor with their Honest Titles series of redesigned movie posters. The creative team of writers and graphic designers over at CollegeHumor have really mastered this art of comedy, offering new titles for the candidate films that any person, whether they've seen the films or not, can agree are plausible first impressions.
The posters offer wit, puns, and downright honesty when it comes to how audiences translate these movies in their minds. They are even produced using the same font and coloring, making anyone who just takes a quick look think that it's a real print promo for the respective films. Kathryn Bigelow's controversial film Zero Dark Thirty is retitled as Call of Duty: Al Qaeda in the same typographical cutout as the original poster. The title is also accompanied by the repeated caption "Not The Hurt Locker" referring to Bigelow's previous Oscar-winning hit with a similar military theme.
The captions and quotes the faux posters include are almost as funny as the titles themselves. For Beasts of the Southern Wild, retitled as The One That Probably Should Win But Won't, CollegeHumor's revamped poster quotes The New York Times as saying "I'm not crying, you're crying!" with the caption "Better pretend you saw this one." I guess we'll just have to wait until February 24th to see which of these contenders take home the big prize.
