For millennia, humans and animals have coexisted in Africa’s Great Rift Valley, a vast geographical trench often considered to be the cradle of humankind. Home to some of the earliest hominid fossils and countless habitats, the topographical scar stretches across 11 countries on the African continent and into the Middle East, complete with deep valleys, rivers, volcanic mountains, and a chain of lakes.
