In order to educate and protect Turkish citizens from natural disasters, Portugese architecture firm OODA conceptualized this magnificent building for the Istanbul Disaster Prevention + Education Center.
The center will host a variety of courses and seminars focusing around disasters. Simulation facilities inside allow visitors to virtually experience earthquakes, hurricanes, fire fighting, smoke, liquefaction, tsunamis, first aid, and emergency communications.
OODA's cross-shaped building features an exterior with Arabic patterns, while the grounds surrounding the building are landscaped based on traditional Turkish patterns. On the interior, the center is split up into six sections: the entrance, planetarium, library, training, simulation, conference area, and administration. The building's unique shape allows natural daylight to filter through the gaps and helps moderate the interior temperature.
In the event that a real natural disaster occurs, the center is so stable that it is designed to withstand traumatic forces. This means that locals, as well as travelers, can use the facility as a safe place for refuge if they ever need.
