Culture Clash: China’s 56 Ethnic Groups

With just over 1.3 billion people, China is the largest and most populated country in the world. With the world's population at approximately 6.7 billion, China represents a full 20%, which means one in every five people on the planet is a resident of China.

China also has one of the world's oldest civilizations, with archaeological evidence dating back over 5,000 years. They have had the largest and most advanced civilization for much of recorded history, and are viewed as a source of many major inventions, including one of the world's oldest written language systems.

While the vast majority of Chinese are Han Chinese, the remainder are distributed among 55 other ethnic groups. In this set, all of the ethnic groups are portrayed in professionally composed group portraits, with subjects wearing traditional dress and often carrying traditional instruments or tools.
