Yesterday, Eugene and I attended the
preview of MOCA's upcoming show
Art in the Streets. At the gift shop (which displayed a nice piece by Shepard Fairey), we picked up three books with the same name.
Written by Jeffrey Deitch (the MOCA Director and Exhibition Curator) Roger Gastman and Aaron Rose (Associate Curators),
Art in the Streets is a nice, 300+ page accompaniment to the show. Rizzoli is publishing this book which covers the global history of graffiti and street art. Divided up by different major cities like NYC, L.A. and San Francisco, it aims to not only showcase the works of street artists, it provides some interesting stories that describe how street art rose from being an underground art form to a celebrated movement.
You'll find works by everyone from Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Blu, Futura, Phil Frost, Os Gemeos, Keith Haring, Todd James (REAS), Barry McGee (Twist), Retna, Kenny Scharf, Swoon, Ed Templeton, and more. The book is particularly great for anyone who can't make it to the show...
It retails for $39.95 at
MOCA or
Rizzoli. Now, just for our Facebook fans, we're giving away 3 of them!
Starting today and thru Tuesday (April 19th) 11:59 PM PST, head over to our Facebook fan page and tell us who your favorite street artist is in the Facebook link to this post. That's it. We'll randomly choose 3 winners. You can enter once per day. Good luck!
