Farmer Saves Newborn Calf from Freezing to Death by Holding Him in Hot Tub

One resourceful farmer took quick action to make sure that a newborn cow wouldn't freeze to death by treating the calf to a nice, relaxing dip in the hot tub.

Dean Gangwer, a third-generation farmer in Rossville, Indiana, keeps track of over a hundred cattle, but he says he must have missed one of his heifers give birth recently. “She decided to go off by herself, which a lot of cows do, they want to be alone,” he explained to RTV6. “[In a] big old pile of snow, I found this calf laying in there.” The baby cow was barely breathing and had an extremely low body temperature, so Gangwer rushed to get the newborn in his truck and back home.

Once they reached the house, the farmer had the unconventional idea of sitting in his outdoor hot tub to try to get the calf's body temperature back to normal. Gangwer jumped into the hot tub fully dressed and held the little cow for an hour until they were both warm and cozy. Then he took the calf–now named Leroy–inside to dry him off and wrap him in electric blankets.

Thanks to the farmer's quick thinking and loving care, Leroy has fully recovered and will rejoin the herd soon.
