17-Year-Old Photographer's Miniature World is One Big Surreal Adventure

We first discovered the surreal photography of Zev Hoover when he was only 14 years old. Now, nearly three years later, browsing through Hoover's Flickr account continues to fill us with an infectious sense of magic and spectacle. This bonafide child-wonder has been channelling his vivid imagination into enchanting photography since the age of 8. Better known online by the name FiddleOak, this adolescent creative continues to produce dazzling images that illustrate the simple splendour of a world seen through youthful eyes filled with promise and imagination.

Shooting regular backgrounds and then superimposing miniaturized subjects within each image, Hoover creates unique moments of pure joy. He deftly demonstrates the importance that perspective has on shaping the worlds that we choose to see. Although the young Massachusetts-based photographer dabbles in a variety of genres and photography techniques, his primary focus is portrait work that strays over the boundaries of realism straight into a land of fantasy. Reminiscent of folklore and fairytales such as Tom Thumb and Thumbelina, his playful images transport his audience on a magical journey by presenting a vision unmarred by the laws of reality.
