Kindergarteners in 1949 Drew Their Dads from Memory, and Life Magazine Captured the Results

In 1949, Doris Morcom, a kindergarten teacher at Sedgwick Elementary School in West Hartford, Connecticut, had a playful idea for the schoolโ€™s upcoming Fatherโ€™s Night. She asked her young students to draw their dads entirely from memory. The resulting portraits were both surprisingly accurate and hilariously imperfect, capturing the way each child saw their dad in their mindโ€™s eye.

Spectral Curtains of Light Created Through Long-Exposure Photos Float Across Stark Landscapes

It started with an accidentโ€”or, in this case, more of a pleasant surprise. Back in 2014, Reuben Wu was shooting in Californiaโ€™s Trona Pinnacles national park at night when he realized something unexpected had wormed its way into his photographs. A truckโ€™s headlights had illuminated the surrounding landscape; but, rather than being discouraged by a possibly ruined image, Wu was struck by inspiration.

The Senate Sergeant at Arms has put out a call for a photographer to โ€œdocument important and historic moments in the United States Senate for today and future generations.โ€  The position, titled Photographer #508, will be responsible for planning, shooting, and editing photos for a variety of projects.

Photos of the Most Adorable Flying Squirrel Species Native to Japan

Hokkaido, Japanโ€™s northernmost island, is known for its incredible scenery, but itโ€™s also home to some of the cutest animals on the planet. Wildlife photographer Masato Sasaki spends his time documenting all of wonderful the birds and mammals in the area, but thereโ€™s one species that stands out as the most adorable of them allโ€”the Ezo-momonga, a subspecies of the Siberian flying squirrel.
