Pool Table is a fun and unexpected pun that turns a game of billiards into a small body of standing water. Viewers might feel inclined to take a short swim after checking out this coffee table! As part of the London Design Festival, artists Marcus Beck and Simon Macro, of Freshwest Design, approached a pretty basic piece of furniture in a really playful way. The team says they enjoy working with experimental, as well as functional, designs and they are always motivated to think up fresh, new ideas and concepts.
Featuring a whimsical creativity, this reflective coffee table is formed out of 50mm of thick blue acrylic that distorts light, giving the illusion of an actual swimming pool. A stainless steel base provides support for the tabletop and the miniature diving board that sits at the edge of the rectangle. In the artists' statement, Beck and Macro state, "Playing with scale, the miniature diving board seems to transform the solid surface of the acrylic into the serenity of still water." The design provides table owners with the opportunity to put their feet up on a magical, watery surface, and dream of a refreshing dip in a crystal clear blue swimming pool on a hot summer day.
