Retractable Bed Saves Space in a 580-Square-Foot Home

Designer Funn Roberts recently had the task of redesigning a 580-square-foot cabin belonging to actor Vincent Kartheiser (Pete Campbell of AMC's Mad Men). The small, sound space in Hollywood was renovated, bit by bit, since the two men first began working together in 2010. The construction of the home's interior turned into a sort of collaboration in which Kartheiser impulsively approached Roberts with wild ideas, who in turn adapted each vision into a realistic, livable design.

The renovation partnership has resulted in a beautiful home filled with aesthetically pleasing and space-saving designs. While the space offers a welcoming blend of modern and rustic motifs, something that Kartheiser refers to as a “Japanese industrial” style, the main attraction of the compact home is the spatially efficient bed that is suspended in mid-air and easily pulled down.

The retractable piece of furniture is attached to a 300-pound steel counterweight that allows it to work on an effective pulley system. The bed is thoughtfully designed to fit the space in either position. As a ceiling fixture, it is not an eyesore and blends into the rest of the room. Down below, there's more space for Kartheiser to roam, lounge, or work. There's even a slab of redwood hinged against the wall behind the bed that can be flipped down and used as a table when the bed is hoisted up.
