Blood and Flames
My name is Graeme Nailor and I am an art teacher from Parksville, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Every year I get students to create a Remembrance Day Poster and this year I decided to create a painting that brings the Middle East Conflict to light. During our annual ceremony, the lighting was dimmed and the painting was highlighted at the end of the gym. Many students and colleagues talked to me afterwards about the impact of the image. I created the composition from numerous resources and purposefully positioned the man and his son so you would not see open eyes. This, in turn, forces the viewer to circulate their focus around the landscape. I wanted to share the image and I thought that during these times it might draw attention to the intimate, personal human destruction of war.
