Hand in Hand, NY Remembers 9/11

To commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the September 11 attacks, thousands of people this morning, at precisely 8:46 a.m. (the time the first plane hit the World Trade Center), joined hands and formed a human chain along the waterfront in Lower Manhattan.

People were then encouraged to visit Battery Park and post a message or memento on their Wall of Remembrance, portions of which will be displayed at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Organized by the Manhattan Community Board 1, it was called the Hand in Hand event.

"The line stretched all the way from the tip of lower Manhattan to past the World Trade Center site," said Navid Baraty, who took these shots. "It was really moving seeing so many people come together and hold hands with each other. It was such a beautiful morning today and really hard to believe that so much horror and chaos happened within a few feet 10 years ago. I felt kind of awkward taking photos during the moment of silence. I didn't want to be disrespectful to any of the victims or families, but felt it was important to capture the minute when everyone held hands at 8:46 a.m."
